Warning – word related rant coming up

“The exception proves the rule” does not mean what many people think it does. “Prove” in this cast is to test (like when you prove a cake to see if it’s cooked), not to establish as true.

So this maxim states “the exception tests the rule”, therefore reconsider if the rule is true when an exception occurs. It doesn’t state “the exception says the rule must be correct”.
