The passing of one of the great people in my life

Dr Janet Moore was my Director of Studies at Cambridge. I first met her at my entrance interview, when she produced a huge insect – as big as the hand she held it in – then said, “I had another one, but it’s escaped somewhere in the room.” We’ve kept in touch ever since. She was maternal, highly intelligent, full of common sense and an expert on wormy substances. (She was one of the inspirations behind Ariadne Peters, and her husband’s not using his title fed into Mr Stewart’s doing the same.)

The family’s choice of charity is particularly moving and apt.
